Laos Australia National Scholarships

Laos Australia National Scholarship (LANS) is a bilateral cooperation project between the Governments of Australia and Laos, under which the Australian Government provides comprehensive scholarships to underprivileged young men and women from targeted rural districts of Laos, especially women, ethnic backgrounds and persons with a disability, to study undergraduate degrees in priority areas of study at the National University of Laos (NUOL) and the Souphanouvong University (SU).

LANS Organisation Structure

LANS Project Management Group (PMG) is the highest authority overseeing the program. PMG members include:

  • Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, through the Australian Embassy in Laos;
  • Laos Ministry of Education and Sports (the Planning Department and the Student Affairs Department)
  • Laos Australia Institute; and
  • Partnering Universities (National University of Laos and Souphanouvong University).

The PMG regularly consults with Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry to study current and future labour markets for LANS graduates.

Academic Support Program

LANS is the largest single contributor to domestically-based tertiary awards in Laos. It is recognised for the size and scope of its financial package (covering tuition and other allowances), Academic Support Program (ASP) and inclusive education program.

The ASP is an important component of LANS. Ongoing LANS awardees receive a compulsory Academic Support Program in English, IT, job readiness and other necessary life skills. For their mental health and physical wellbeing, pastoral care is provided for free at each of the partnering universities.

Awardees with disability are assessed by specialists after which appropriate assistive learning devices are provided depending on budget. With the goal of reaching a true inclusive education at tertiary level, LANS works closely with the partnering universities to make it accessible by the students with disability. Peer to peer training practices are strongly supported.

Women Leadership Development

Women’s Leadership Program –  Passing the Torch

Passing the Torch, a 4-month program, supported by the Australian Government, aims to forge networks and linkages across generations of Lao women. The program matched senior and retired Australian Awards women alumni with Laos Australia National Scholarships (LANS) alumni, to mentor these younger women in finding their vision and achieving their career goals.
